Upcycled Jewelry Display

If you are interested in a great upcycle project, I hope this one gives you some inspiration.  What do you need?  an extra frame, cabinet door, extra scrap wood will work and you can design as you wish, the sky is the limit with what you can do.

While I was working on my Refinished Entertainment Center project and trying to decide if I should keep the middle doors, I saw on Pinterest this Jewelry Display to hang on the wall.

The decision was over, the doors were staying off and my sister was getting a present :)  I have two doors, so once this one is completed I might make someone else a present.  But for now, the 2nd one is sitting in the basement painted.

Here is what I started with a plain cabinet door.  BTW that is my kitchen rug 💓

Here is the inspiration that I found on Pinterest.  So mine was going to be different of course, much simpler, but I really liked it and had me start thinking about how I could use the cabinet door into something like this.

Here's is what I needed to create my Upcycled Jewelry Display.

  • Wood Frame
  • Black Chalk Board - Home Depot
  • 1 ft. x 2 ft. Satin Nickel Mosaic Aluminum Sheet - Home Depot
  • Wire Cutters
  • Glue
  • Fusion Mineral Paint
  • Knobs and Hooks - Hobby Lobby
  • Wooden Dowel Rod - Hobby Lobby
  • Knife - to cut the chalkboard
  • E6000 Glue

The size of my Cabinet Door is 20" x 20" and the inside portion where the Aluminum Sheet and the Chalk Board would go is 16.5" x 16.5"

I had wire cutters to help with the Aluminum sheet, but I had to figure out how to cut the chalkboard.  Here is where I had a hard time because all I had is a drywall knife 😅, a table saw or a jigsaw would have been so much easier.  Le'ts just shall say,  that when explaining how I did this, my family and I had a good laugh.  If I do anything else like this again I will go buy or borrow one of those tools :)

Once everything was cut and fit in place, I glued them both to the inside portion of the cabinet door using E6000 glue then placed some heavy items to keep them in place without moving.

Here is what is left after I cut the sheet

do the chalkboard first, then lay the aluminum sheet on top

This is the next step: adding hardware and a dowel rod.  I added these beautiful hooks on the seam where the chalkboard and sheet have meshed, not that it looks bad, I just like the idea of not seeing the seam.  I painted the rod to match the frame and let everything dry overnight.  Btw I have a Miter saw and that's how I cut the rod, for me I had to cut the rod to 19.5" to fit on the hooks.

Measure twice, cut once :)

Bee Knob, I just screwed in where the original knob was.

The last part was adding the remaining hardware pieces to the sides.  I glued these first with E6000 glue, then placed little nails in for extra steadiness.  If she wants to add more hooks to the frame there is plenty of space, but I think this Upcycled Jewelry Display is a good start to see what she needs.

It's a wrap ;) I have a small piece of the dowel rod, some aluminum sheeting, and some chalkboard leftover.  We will see where they end up taking me.

Hope this gives you some inspiration to make one of your own. I really enjoyed creating this for her.  if you want to see the other Jewelry Display I made in the past, check it out on HomeTalk here.
